My husband and I were in the car a couple of weeks ago and we passed a Steak N Shake and he said to me, “Remember the dressing they had there?  It was so good.”  He was referring to the creamy, delicious, calorie laden, heart attack in the making thousand island dressing that I could eat by the bucket full.  This was not your average Kraft style dressing, oh no!  This was unlike any dressing I had ever had before.  This was truly a mission!  Let me tell you I went through many attempts to finally find the ONE that holds the rank of….drum roll please….BEST ALTERNATIVE TO STEAK N SHAKE THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING THAT IS CLEAN!  Woo Hoo!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups mayonnaise (I used Spectrum brand canola mayonnaise)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup onions, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup pickles, finely chopped (I use Bubbies Pure Kosher Pickles - they are the only clean ones I can find)
  • 1 hard boiled egg, finely chopped (optional)

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl mix together all of the ingredients.  Yes, that is it!

Notes:

This dressing is great for making Reuben sandwiches (see recipe here) and is also fantastic as a dip!  When I make this recipe I separate it in half.  One half I save for making sandwiches and the other half I put in a blender and give it a quick pulse.  This makes it a little thinner and it’s perfect as a salad dressing.
